Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is creating a superstar and three players prove it – Express

With six goals to his name, Marcus Rashford looks back to his best at Manchester United. He’s already netted more than the likes of Son Heung-Min, Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling so far this season. And the sky is the limit now for a player who is gaining strength under Erik ten Hag’s guidance with each passing week…

Manchester United’s 3-0 win over Sheriff wasn’t exactly a match that will live long in the memory.

But, for Rashford, it was a big occasion – with the England international managing his 99th goal for the club across all competitions.

It has been a remarkable turnaround from the 24-year-old who, at the very beginning of the season, was being tipped to leave the club.

Rashford was dire last term, toiling as the Red Devils finished sixth in the Premier League table under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.

He netted just five goals across all competitions, while he still seemed to be impacted by his struggles with England at the European Championships – and his penalty miss against Italy in the shootout in the final at Wembley.

But, credit to Rashford, he has turned things around.

United are likely to play around 50 matches this season and, so far, the forward has featured in 14 games across all competitions.

He’s averaging 174 minutes a goal, far less than the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Bruno Fernandes, while looking a menacing threat each and every time he steps out on the pitch.

Should Rashford go on to play 60 games this term, something that’s not out of the question given how the Red Devils are aiming to challenge on all fronts, then it’s possible he’ll clock up his best ever statistics for an individual campaign.

Without a doubt, he’s emerged as one of the bright sparks of the Ten Hag era so far.

And he appears to have won the Dutchman’s trust right from the very beginning, whether he’s used down the middle or deployed out wide.

Rashford has netted one more goal than Jesus and Son, over at Arsenal and Tottenham respectively.

And he’s also outscored Sterling, who has struggled for consistency following his move to Chelsea from Manchester City back in the summer.

Rashford has always been a curious case. He’s got all the talent in abundance to be a United legend, but has often struggled for consistency right when it really matters.

Right now, however, it looks as though the 24-year-old is coming good just at the right time.

United need Rashford right now, especially when you consider the other members of Ten Hag’s squad and their current situations.

Anthony Martial has looked bright when picked, but the France international continues to spend more time on the sidelines than on the pitch.

Sancho’s form has left much to be desired, with the former Borussia Dortmund star fading after a bright start to the season.

Antony is still getting used to life in English football, despite netting three goals so far.

And Ronaldo isn’t the player he used to be, something that was sadly evident despite his goal against Sheriff on Thursday night.

Regarding Rashford, meanwhile, the United star was hailed by Owen Hargreaves following his impressive goal and display against the minnows from Moldova.

“I was blown away by the numbers there, 99 goals at 24, it’s amazing,” he said.

“By the time he’s finished he could have 250 goals for United.

“He’s just a quality player, everything’s there. I love his talent I really do. He just needs to be a little more consistent and the goals will fly in for him.”
